Speckled Sea Trout

gator trout

Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River is home to some of the largest spotted sea trout found in the world. Sea trout are an aggressive fish that will strike at almost anything. The speckled sea trout is dark gray or green on top, with sky blue tinges shading to silvery and white below. They have numerous, distinct round black spots on their backs extending to the dorsal fins and tail. On their tails there is a black mark, they have no scales on the soft dorsal fin. In their mouth, they have two prominent canine teeth, usually present at the tip of their upper jaw. Speckled sea trout are found inshore and/or nearshore over grass, sand and sandy bottoms. During cold weather, they move into slow-moving or still, deep waters. Speckled sea trout are commonly 4 pounds on the West coast, but tend to be bigger on the East coast, with the Florida record being 15 pounds, 6 ounces. Sea trout are often referred to as gator trout when they are large, which tends to be over 6 pounds. Sea trout adults feed mainly on shrimp and small fish, living in estuaries. They tend to move only short distances.
