Redfish

redfish

Redfish are one of America’s most popular inshore saltwater fish species. Known as a stubborn fish that will not quit, redfish can be absolute brutes and are truly one of the most exciting fish to catch. The redfish or red drum has become one of the most sought after fish on the Gulf and Atlantic shores. Primarily an inshore fish, it became popular as a food fish after being offered as blackened redfish in New Orleans restaurants. Redfish are especially abundant and large on the east central Florida coastline and Mosquito Lagoon. Redfish have a coppery bronze color with a hint of red, but color will vary depending on water clarity. Typically, redfish have one spot on the base of their tails, but often there are several or many spots.

Mosquito Lagoon in East Central Florida boasts some of the best inshore and estuary fishing for redfish in the world. Redfish in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon are known for both quality and quantity. They are found in lagoon systems all around the coast of Florida and some are even found offshore. The best locations to find redfish in Florida are Mosquito Lagoon, Banana Creek, Banana River and the Northern Indian River Lagoon. Redfish feed on crustaceans, fish and small mollusk. Often redfish are in such shallow water that you can see their tales and backs protruding from the water, hence their nickname tailing redfish. Redfish have several different names or aliases depending on what part of the country you are from. They are called channel bass in the Carolinas, puppy drum, in the gulf areas and simply redfish or red drum all over the south east.
